More from the sketchbook

No matter what I'm working on, or how busy I may be, I confess... I always find time to doodle in my sketchbook. There's nothing more freeing than letting your mind wander with a pencil or pen on paper, is there? I'm always interested in the types of sketchbooks other cartoonists and artists use, too... The type of paper dictates the types of media one can use, and all artists have their preferences, including style (hardbound, spiral, clipboard, etc), even the brand of the sketchbook. So, what kind do you use?

I've been going ultra cheap lately with a u:create sketch diary. I use a 6" by 9.5" size. It gets the job done and takes ink from a Pilot Precise V5 pen well.

I like the Pilot V5's because they remind me of technical pens, but I don't have to worry about clogging or losing it.

Yes, I find the more inexpensive the sketchbook, the more prone I am to let loose without worry of it becoming too precious to mess up, so to speak. Anyone else?

And for sketching, I'm also a Pilot V5 fan myself, and I've recently been enjoying the very deep black of the Uniball pens again.

I've been using the Pro Art sketch books lately. Lots of pages. Okay for inking. I tend to use Micron Pigma ink pens and PITT artist pens (mainly the brush pen) along with Sharpies for those black areas.

Very cool, guys! I've used Canson 8.5x11 "balloon sketch" spiral books for awhile now, but recently grabbed a 9X12 Strathmore (brown-covered) spiral Sketch book, as well as the smaller version of it (5.5x8.5) for easier portability in some places... The tooth is an interesting grade, and it takes everything (pencil, pen, etc) very well, and these pads are nice and sturdy. I love to use the Pilot V5, as well as the Uniball pens. And ALWAYS a Flair black felt-tip! The good ol' standby!

Barnes and Nobles is the only store that I will buy sketchbooks from. They have the highest quality of paper.
