"The Trek Life" creative process

I'm often asked about my working process for creating my comics, in this case, for example, "The Trek Life," my thrice-weekly webcomic at STARTREK.COM. My process starts out VERY rough. After the writing and super rough doodles are complete (always done in my sketchbook), I then enter into the sketch phase of the actual comic that is nearly incoherent in the beginning, and the drawings basically build and build, like molding clay, to the final product. Here you can see the creative process behind a Sunday format strip, from beginning to end... pencil roughs, to inks, to color, which I do in Photoshop. Enjoy!

Loving this step-by-step post. It's cool to see how much work goes into a single strip.

OMG! David Reddick! How are you? Obviously still doing very cool stuff. For my life updates, check out my blog www.stardate30.blogspot.com. It just occurred to me that I have a star trek theme too. How funny! Oh, and Al is jealous you met Wesley Crusher AKA Will Wheaton.

Thanks Lucas. I think the most fascinating thing to see is other cartoonist's process. I'm always curious about what sort of sketchbook, pens, paper, digital means, etc cartoonists use in their process...

Hi Miss Doir!
And thanks for the blog address - checked it out - how IRONIC you're running with a Trek theme (as well as running around with someone named Picard, haha). And tell Al Wil is a VERY cool dude and super nice.
